Chairman’s Report 2017

Chairman’s Report 2017 – Scott Fowler

2017 has been a fantastic year for the Shirley Rugby Football Club. Out of a dark few months for the club late in 2016 and early in 2017, we have managed to create a fresh and exciting pathway for the club moving forward.

The year also saw the club celebrate its Centenary Year, which was done so over Queens Birthday weekend. I would personally like to thank all those involved in the planning and running of the weekend events, it truly was an enjoyable weekend for all.

This year we have established a Recruitment and Retention committee, which will focus on keeping our current players in the club and enjoying their rugby as well as attracting new players to the club and showing them what Shirley Rugby can offer them. We are also looking to establish a finance committee whose task will be sourcing funding and sponsorship for the club as well as arranging fundraising events.

On the field this year, we saw a much improved year by our Division 1 team, coached superbly by Bruce Morton and Jarrad Cosgrove. They managed to take out the Bowl Trophy, but this seemed a bit of a consolation considering the team were knocking on the door of the top six at times throughout the season. We have most of our Division 1 playing contingent returning next year along with Bruce and Jarrad, which makes for an exciting prospect as I am sure they will all be hungry to improve on the success of this season. Division 2 had a great year also, coached by Agro and Ghost and led well on the field by Ben (Westy) and Mark. They managed to put together some fantastic performances against some top teams knocking over University and New Brighton through the season. Our two Division 4 teams also had good years, with the W’s just getting tipped up by Lyttleton in the competitions Cup final. Our Colts team also had a solid year, picking up a few wins and establishing a great team culture. It will be exciting to see a few of those boys graduating up to some of our Senior teams in the coming years.

Our Junior teams flourished this year also with all teams having great playing numbers. We are working on new ways to develop these young players throughout their time at Shirley, in the hope they all return to the club to continue their rugby.

I would like to thank the other Board members – Mel, Ken, Dave and Jarrad for all their hard work this year. It has been difficult at times but we have always found a way through. Also a big thanks to Julie and Shona for all their hard work behind the scenes.

On behalf of the club I would also like to pay tribute to both Roger Smith and Jarrad Cosgrove for their uncompromising efforts ensuring the success of the club over many years. Jarrad is stepping down from the Board to focus on coaching of the Division 1 team and Roger is calling time on his term as the Clubs President.

I am really excited at the prospect of where the club could be this time next year.
